Built by the Sherman P. Phelps during America’s “Gilded Age” (1870-1900), this three-story brick and stone mansion is the last of its kind on the street once referred to as “Mansion Row.”

This historic manor was designed by Isaac G. Perry who later became the chief architect for the New York State Capitol building in Albany, New York. The "Gem" at 191 Court Street is an exceptional example of Perry’s exceptional ability to coordinate into his designs beautiful rare woods, metal and glass in the interior of the house.

Phelps was a successful business man, banker, Republican elector for Abraham Lincoln, and mayor of the city of Binghamton, his family home has been preserved and is open to the public for tours, exhibitions, educational programs, and events. It was declared a national historic landmark in 1973 and is placed on the National Register of Historic American Buildings.
