SUMMARY:Tannery Talk | The First Adirondackers | Presented by TPC
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 8 | 2 PM \nSuggested donation at the door: $10 \nBook Signing & Sales: The authors will have their book available for purchase and will sign it after the talk. Books are $20; they will accept cash or check. \nThe First Adirondackers: 12\,000 Years of Indigenous Peoples in the Adirondack Uplands. \nTalk Summary – A widespread claim holds that nobody lived in the Adirondacks before Euro-American colonizers arrived. It is false. New research helps to confirm what Indigenous cultural traditions have held all along\, that people have lived in the Adirondack uplands since time immemorial. In this multicultural collaboration\, artist David Kanietakeron Fadden and scientist Curt Stager join forces to challenge the false claim of absence with evidence of Indigenous presence on the land from the end of the last ice age to the present day. Through their blending of art and science\, they demonstrate that the rich human story in the Adirondacks is\, quite literally\, “older than the trees.” \nBook Summary – The First Adirondackers challenges the widespread\, long-standing belief that the Adirondack uplands of northern New York were uninhabited before the arrival of European colonizers. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Through local indigenous traditions and supporting findings by natural science\, authors David Fadden and Curt Stager expose\, document\, and honor the long human presence in the Adirondacks\, helping not only to redefine what it means to be an Adirondacker\, but also contributing to a more complete understanding of America itself. Fadden\, a master storyteller and renowned painter\, uses traditional oral history and stunning works of art to capture the humanity and vitality of Indigenous peoples of the region. Stager\, a natural science professor at Paul Smith’s College\, explains in scientific terms how people are elementally linked to the Adirondack region through his own research on environmental and cultural history. By challenging the predominant Eurocentric narrative of the Adirondacks\, The First Adirondackers does not seek to erase history\, but rather to help recover a proud and wonderful history.

SUMMARY:Your Local Area Clock Maker...200 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:The ordering of time 200 years ago was just as important as it is now\, and regardless of one’s social and economic standing\, the ownership of a clock was a necessity as well as a status symbol. For the Cortland County resident in that period there were\, remarkably enough\, over 20 different area shelf clock makers to choose from. Russ Oechsle will provide an overview of how clock ownership in this era represented social status and how the wonderful variety of locally made clocks served to fill this need. \nAn important part of the mission of the Cortland County Historical Society is education\, and CCHS Lunch & Learn programs are a way for us to connect our community to local and regional history. Lunch & Learn programs are free and open to the public to align with our goal of sharing history more widely.\nPlease bring your own lunch if you wish\, and we’ll provide a beverage and dessert. All Lunch & Learn programs take place at our event space at 9 Grace Street\, Cortland. If the parking lot is full\, please park on either Jewett Avenue or Grace Street\, across from our building. We’re looking forward to having you join us!\nIf you have any questions before the day of this event\, please call us at 607-756-6071.
