The Erie Canal
With 201 years of passenger & cargo service (1825-2026) – and recently as a Recreational Paradise for hiking & biking, kayaking & canoeing, nature watching, and boating – the historic Erie Canal inspires.
Since its opening in 1825, the Canal has been recognized around the World as an engineering marvel. It transformed New York City into one of the nation’s greatest seaports and served as the premier “Gateway to the West” connecting the Great Lakes and NY ‘Canal’ towns including Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Albany to the New York City Harbor.
The Seneca Chief (pictured) s a handmade reproduction of an original packet boat. It traveled last year (2025) from Buffalo to NYC During the 200th Anniversary of the Erie Canal, and commemorated the original ‘marriage of the waters’ by pouring water from Lake Erie into NY Harbor, much like they did 200 years ago.
