One of the most popular hikes in the Adirondacks, the Indian Head & Rainbow Falls Trail, offers breathtaking summit views of the expansive Adirondack High Peaks and Lower Ausable Lake.

The 10.8-mile hike to the top passes by several waterfalls and other outlooks to stop and take in scenic views, and the trail doesn’t require rock scrambling, making it a more approachable option than some of the other hikes in the area despite the length of the trip.

The private group Adirondack Mountain Reserve, or AMR, owns the land, and public access is provided through a conservation easement; therefore this hike is subject to some different rules than usual. No dogs are allowed on this trail and the rules are strictly enforced. To hike the trail, a permit is needed from May 1 to October 31. You can get the permit by visiting https://www.hikeamr.org/
