Seated majestically atop Albany’s State Street hill, the New York State Capitol has served as the seat of government for New York since the 1880s. Under the direction of five architects, the Capitol was built by hand of solid masonry over a period of 32 years and today is open for tours that tell about the history, architecture and governmental function of the building and surrounding area.
Tours are available Monday through Saturday and reservations are not required for weekdays. The Capitol is situated in the Empire State Plaza, which also includes the New York State Museum, the Egg Performing Arts Center, and Corning Tower Observation Deck.
