About Oneida County

Located in the heart of Central New York, Oneida County is home to events, activities, attractions and recreation to suit everyone during every season.

Oneida County is located in the geographic center of New York State and is home to the cities of Utica and Rome, as well as a variety of small towns with charming streets to stroll. Take the kids for a visit to the ever-popular Utica Zoo, or stop by the newly refreshed and remodeled Utica Children’s Museum, complete with new exhibits and activities. The adults will enjoy a trip to the Saranac Brewery, where famous Utica Club beer has been brewed since Prohibition ended.

History fans will have plenty to do here: the Mohawk Valley Path Through History includes seven historic sites within Oneida County, including the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site, the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the American Revolution. The Erie Canal also runs through the center of the county, and there are several museums dedicated to its history, including the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, and the Erie Canal Village in Rome.

Bordered by the shores of Oneida Lake to the west, the foothills of the Adirondacks to the north, and the quiet charm of scenic farmlands to the south and east, Oneida County is an excellent home base for outdoor recreation. Spend the day in Sylvan Beach, where you can hit the amusement park and take a dip in the lake; head north to Forestport or White Lake and explore the fringes of the Adirondack Park; or travel the Route 20 Scenic Byway through rolling farmlands to the south. It’s also home to several state parks and bisected by the Empire State Trail, the longest multi-use trail system in the country, which follows the path of the Erie Canal.
