Galloo Island Lighthouse
Erected in 1820, Galloo Island Lighthouse was the first American lighthouse built on Lake Ontario
Erected in 1820, Galloo Island Light, located on Galloo Island in Lake Ontario near Henderson Harbor, was the first American lighthouse built on Lake Ontario.
Due to erosion from an extensive rise in the lake level, a new 60-foot-tall tower and dwelling began late in 1866 and was completed the following year. The light was automated in 1963 and the lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
Today, most of the island and light tower is private property, with an easement for the Coast Guard for the light in the tower. There is also a small Coast Guard Station on the island.
Please note: this lighthouse is located in a restricted area on private property.
