Located a short walk or drive from Fort Ontario Historic Site  in Oswego, NY, The Safe Haven Museum is the only official WWII holocaust refugee shelter museum in the World. The Museum occupies an original 1920's quartermaster building, and is dedicated to keeping alive the story of the 982 European refugees who were allowed into the United States and “rescued” by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Nazi Holocaust. The Refugees were temporarily housed at Fort Ontario from August 1944 – February 1946, and the Museum chronicles the story of their desparate plight & despair, perseverance, and post-war triumph.

A FREE 'Safe Haven Museum'  App can be downloaded to your mobile device from the App store or Google play, and the web version is available HERE.  Used for educational purposes, for touring the museum, and seen around the World, the App displays images and narratives found inside the actual museum, with descriptions narrated for the visually impaired.

The Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum was completely renovated in 2020, and the New Museum contains an intro movie, artifacts, state-of-the-art video screens, and 'stations' which tell the story of the refugees from their beginnings in Europe, to their struggles during Nazi German occupation, to their Safe Haven rescue at Fort Ontario leading to freedom in America.
