Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse
Thirty Mile Point Light is listed was chosen for the “Lighthouses of the Great Lakes” postage stamp series
Thirty Mile Point Light is on the south shore of Lake Ontario in Niagara County and is part of Golden Hill State Park. Decommissioned by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1958, the lighthouse is available for rental year-round.
The lighthouse was built in 1875 of hand-carved stone and gets its name because it is the point 30 miles east of the Niagara River. It wasn’t actually built to guide mariners to a safe harbor, but rather as a coastal light, warning mariners of shoals and guiding them along this portion of Lake Ontario.
Listed in the Historic American Buildings Survey, it was was also one of five lighthouses chosen for the “Lighthouses of the Great Lakes” postage stamp series designed by Howard Koslow in 1995. Starting in 2001, the second story of the dwelling has been rented for week-long stays in the summer or shorter visits during the rest of the year, allowing its guests just a small, but exciting glimpse into what life was like for a keeper along this isolated stretch of Lake Ontario.
