Newtown Battlefield State Park was the site of the Battle of Newtown fought in August 1779, during the American Revolutionary War. This was the only major battle of the Sullivan Expedition, the Iroquois were defeated decisively and the Newton Battlefield Monument sits atop the hill, dedicated to honoring the hard-fought battle.

Today, the site is a 372-acre state park offering tent and trailer sites, cabins, pavilions, picnic tables, a playground and showers. In 1973, Newtown Battlefield Reservation was designated as a historic landmark and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
