Salmon River Fish Hatchery
The Salmon River Fish Hatchery supplies fish for more than 100 public waters including Lake Ontario
Built in 1980, the Salmon River Fish Hatchery is located just outside of Pulaski in Altmar and supplies fish for more than 100 public waters including Lake Ontario. Each year, this hatchery produces more than 2 million fingerlings (young fish 3-5 inches long) and close to 1 million yearlings (fish one-year old or older).
Open from April to November, visitors can enjoy self-guided tours to get a close look at some of fishing's most sought-after sportfish – salmon and trout. You can also watch the spawning process, where eggs are taken from female fish and fertilized by male fish and visitors in October or late March to early April can see salmon jumping the fish ladder.
There are also informational exhibits and mounted fish and the facility is accessible.
