Get Ready for the Spring/Fall Salmon Run in Pulaski
Why not load up your fishing gear and head to Pulaski for some Urban Fishing?
While fishing in Upstate New York is always great, it can be especially fun in the spring & fall when the salmon are running and just begging to be caught! Each year, sports fishermen of all ages and skill levels journey across the country and from around the world to enjoy Upstate New York’s world-class fishing in its lakes, rivers and streams along with its more contemporary counterpart, “Urban Fishing.” This popular fishing experience allows anglers the opportunity to fish from downtown riverbanks and charming walkways, all just minutes from hotels, restaurants and other amenities and activities, making this a great way for families and couples to get in on the action.
"So why not load up your fishing gear and plan a getaway to Seaway Trail’s village of Pulaski? Located on the famous Salmon River, here you can experience 'Urban Fishing' at its finest as you drop a line from the bridge in the center of town or from the banks of the river, just steps away from all the amenities that Pulaski has to offer."
Because the Salmon River does boast some of the best sports fishing in the country, you will need to plan enough in advance to get yourself a room at one of the area’s “fisherman friendly” accommodations. Inns like the 1880 House Bed & Breakfast, Whitakers Sport Shop and Motel or the rustic and upscale Tailwater Lodge all warmly welcome fisherman and endeavor to ensure a memorable experience for all.
In your explorations between fishing jousts, you will want to make sure to check out the gorgeous Salmon River Falls, the Salmon River Fish Hatchery or one of the nearby state parks like Selkirk State Park to enjoy a walk in nature or on the beach to soak in one of Lake Ontario’s fabulous sunsets. And, of course, you have to try some of the local cuisine at places like the RiverHouse Restaurant or at Tailwater Lodge, which offers a fine dining experience at its onsite restaurant and tavern, the Tailwater Bar & Restaurant.
Whether you land your prize salmon or leave without one, you will be sure to bring wonderful memories – and fish stories – home with you!
Note: The Salmon River stretches 17 miles from the Lighthouse Hill Reservoir in Altmar to where it empties into Lake Ontario at Port Ontario. The Salmon River offers some of the finest sport fishing in the country and there are 12 miles of Public Fishing Rights along the river. Two major fish records have been set in the Salmon River: the Great Lakes record Chinook salmon (47 lbs. 13 oz.) and the world record Coho salmon (33 lbs. 4 oz.).
