The Green Arch’s founder, Francesca Discenza, was the first to make and sell tomato pie in Cortland
Serving the Cortland area for more than 70 years at the same location, the Green Arch’s founder, Francesca Discenza, was the first to make and sell tomato pie in Cortland.
This enterprising Italian immigrant also sold fireworks and operated a “speak easy” during the time of Prohibition, offering up her homemade wine using her grocery store as a front.
Today run by her grandson, the restaurant offers classic Italian dishes along with traditional Utica Greens, Francesca’s flatbread and famous homemade “Arch Sauce” – and, of course, alcoholic beverages!
