Did you ever think you could add “digging for diamonds” to your list of fun things to do while in Upstate New York? Well, thanks to a little gem of a town called Herkimer, you can!

Nestled on the north side of the Mohawk River, the town of Herkimer was settled by Palatine German immigrants around 1723. The village of Herkimer is located within the town of Herkimer and together they are referred to as “The Herkimers.”

Even older than “The Herkimers” are its noted Herkimer Diamonds, which are close to five hundred million years old. You can actually 'mine' for your own at the famous Herkimer Diamond Mines. The bedrock in which these beautiful quartz crystals are found began forming approximately half a billion years ago in a shallow Cambrian Sea that lapped against the southern shores of the ancestral Adirondack Mountains. Incredibly, these phenomenal gemstones rival true diamonds, having a diamond-like geometrical shape that can be made into all kinds of gorgeous jewelry to commemorate your Upstate New York vacation.

While here, take the Living History Cruise with Erie Canal Cruises  where you can relive the thrill of traveling on the Erie Canal and tour the grounds and home of Revolutionary War hero General Nicholas Herkimer at the Little Falls Historic Herkimer Home.
