Seated on the eastern bank of the historic Hudson River, Troy and the nearby cities of Albany and Schenectady form a region popularly known as “the Capital District.” The official "Home of Uncle Sam (see below), Troy also boasts an impressive collection of stained-glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany throughout the charming city.


Around the turn of the 20^th century, Troy was the fourth wealthiest city in the country and today the city is noted for its wealth of Victorian architecture downtown and elaborate private homes. As you enjoy a stroll to take in the beauty of the city’s architecture, you will also find that local shops, artists, sandwich shops, food trucks and coffee shops conveniently abound in any direction.  

While just eight miles from New York’s capital city of Albany and its exciting events, Troy itself is host to a variety of fun and family-friendly events like the Capital District Garden & Flower Show, the Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour and the Troy River Fest. It also has one of the largest farmers’ markets around, offering local, organic, and artisanal goodies every week throughout the year.


The world-renowned "Troy Music Hall,” which dates from the 1870s, is also found in Troy, as is the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the oldest private engineering and technical university in the U.S., founded in 1824.
 
 
Did you know…Troy is the official "Home" of Uncle Sam?
During the War of 1812, Sam Wilson of Troy was a prosperous meat packer. After obtaining a contract to supply beef to the Army, the meat barrels were branded with the initials "U.S.," but soldiers joked that the initials referred to "Uncle Sam," as Samuel Wilson was often called. Even after the war, the concept of "Uncle Sam" remained and in1817, the iconic "I Want You" recruitment poster was created. In1961, Congress officially recognized Samuel Wilson of Troy as the progenitor of the Uncle Sam icon. (Wikipedia)
