Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum
Listed on the National Registers of Historic Sites, the complex features two antique carrousels - the 1916 #1 Special and the 19402 Kiddie Carrousel.
This unique museum is one of the last existing complexes in the United States which originally housed the production of wooden carousel in a series of seven interconnected structures.
Listed on the National Registers of Historic Sites, the complex features two antique carrousels - the 1916 #1 Special with 36 hand-carved horses from two separate eras and more than 580 lights; and the Kiddie Carrousel, a small 1940s aluminum carousel, created for small children to ride alone without adult accompaniment. Both carousels operate daily during the Museum’s hours.
While the hand-carved carousels were the signature of the Allan Herschell Company for decades, the company also manufactured small metal rides for children, "Kiddielands" all across the United States. The complex’s outdoor area features four refurbished kiddie rides; Pony Cart, Wet Boats, Auto Ride, and The Helicopters from the factory’s baby boom era.
Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum also features a Wurlitzer Music Roll Department and The Lockman Collection, which documents the changes in style of carousel animals over a period of 60 years. This collection includes animals from the four eras of carousel companies in North Tonawanda.
