History abounds in Oswego County and is home to the star-shaped Fort Ontario State Historic Site which overlooks Lake Ontario and is open to the public offering exciting re-enactments, haunted tours and more. From 1944 to 1946 the fort served as the only refugee camp in the United States for mostly Jewish victims of the Nazi Holocaust and the Safe Haven Museum next to the fort brings this important event to life. Throughout the centuries, the Iroquois, French and British armies, the Erie and Oswego Canals, the Underground Railroad, and local civic leaders have all left their historic, which can be explored today in area museums, historic sites, local libraries and through distinguished architecture.
