Encompassing more than 47,500 acres, the Slide Mountain Wilderness is the largest and most popular wilderness area in the Catskill Forest Preserve and features Slide Mountain, the tallest peak in all of the Catskills. It is also dog-friendly.
 

All 35 miles of trails in this area are open exclusively to foot travel, affording the visitor an uninterrupted back country experience, offering numerous trailside vistas. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are permitted on all hiking trails and seasonally, fishing and hunting are allowed.
 

The heavily forested area also provides a tremendous opportunity to see a variety of woodland wildlife including deer, bear, and bobcat as well as smaller mammals like porcupine and fisher and hundreds of species of birds.
 

Campers will find 24 designated primitive campsites and 3 lean-tos available.
