Hailed as the cradle of America’s first artistic movement, the Great Northern Catskills is the birthplace of ideas and cultural currents that celebrate and honor the region's unique place in history. In fact, the early 19th century scenic views and striking sceneries inspired a new genre of American art called the Hudson River School, founded by landscape artist Thomas Cole. Explore museums, galleries and historic sites like Thomas Cole National Historic Site and the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse.
Greene County boasts five of the 10 highest Catskill Peaks in the Catskill State Park with hiking trails ideal for birding and wildlife viewing. Most of the park’s trails can accommodate family cyclists and adventurist mountain bikers as well as snowshoers and cross-country skiers. Not far away, Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain offer skiing, snowboarding, and tubing for all levels of ability. The mighty Hudson River along with the several lakes and streams that surround the county provide amazing fishing opportunities as well as plenty of exciting and relaxing water activities. Or change your speed and follow the trail of farmers markets, country stores, boutiques and antique shops to bring home that special find or gift.
Whatever activities your day entails, make sure to fuel up in between at one of the county’s diverse restaurants and bistros, serving up impressive plates for everyone’s palate. As your day winds down, time out in an affordable family hotel/motel option or upscale your experience to one of the charming and elegant resorts.
