On July 16, 1779, Brigadier General Anthony Wayne and his Continental Light Infantry, armed only with bayonets, led a midnight ambush on the British forces here, captured their fort, took their soldiers prisoner, and seized control of the Hudson River for the Americas. This was one of the last battles of the war before America declared victory in 1781 and signed the Treaty of Paris to officially end the war in 1783.
Visit Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site and step back in history as you explore the battlefield and the on-site museum, which includes exhibits on the battle, interpretive programs and reenactments of 18th century life in the military, including cooking and cannon and musket firing demonstrations. The Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site is home to the Stony Point Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse on the Hudson River, built in 1826.
