Schoolhouse Session: Seward in Love
February 22, 2019Host/Presenter: The Schoolhouse
Location: 371 Main Street , Aurora, NY, 13026
Secretary of State William Henry Seward is rarely counted among the great romantics of the 19th century. Yet Seward loved deeply, and, in a forty-plus year marriage in which he was often away from his wife, he loved rather openly in the form of intimate correspondence to her. This talk considers Seward's love life like never before, tracing his relationship to Mrs. Seward from their teenage courtship to their plans for retirement. It also explores his lost loves, near loves, unrequited loves, and the concept of love in general during the Victorian era. In the spirit of Valentine's Day, join Dr. Jeffrey Ludwig, Director of Education at the Seward House Museum, for a historical journey into the affairs of the heart.
