Oswego: Where the Holocaust Came to America
August 5, 2019Time: 2:00 PM
Host/Presenter: Refugee Memorial Monument at Fort Ontario State Historic Site
Location: Fort Ontario, 1 E. 4th St., Oswego, NY, 13126
A 75th Anniversary program will be held at the Refugee Memorial Monument at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego, NY commemorating the 5 August 1944 arrival of nearly 1,000 Holocaust victims from Europe at the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter.
During World War II Fort Ontario was the only camp for victims of the Holocaust located in the United States. Fort Ontario was where the Holocaust Came to America, where the American public and press first encountered victims of Nazi persecution and their personal stories of survival, resulting in Holocaust stories moving from the back to the front pages of newspapers. This FREE event will include a program of speakers, a wreath laying ceremony, and more.
At 2 p.m. a formal 75th Anniversary Commemorative program will begin by the Refugee Monument. Free and open to the public, Ambassador Dani Dayan, Consul General of Israel in New York, will be a featured speaker. As Consul General, he represents the State of Israel to communities from throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Delaware.
