Lake Ontario and the War of 1812 - The National Marine Sanctuary Spring Lecture Series

Lake Ontario and the War of 1812" is the Third Presentation in the Lecture Series presented by the Proposed National Marine Sanctuary Spring Lecture Council and will feature Dr. Tim Abel, Dr. Ben Ford, and Dr. Gary Gibson. Dr. Abel will begin with an overview of the War of 1812 in northern NY, followed by a snapshot of archaeological research done by himself and others over the past 70 years. Dr. Ford will discuss the importance of naval power during the War of 1812 on Lake Ontario, and the shipwrecks that resulted from the signing of the Rush-Bagot Agreement. Dr. Gibson will wrap up describing the arms race between the United States and Great Britain, and why and how the nation’s first strategic arms limitation treaty came about.
