It’s hard to believe that Liberty, Audubon’s non-releasable Bald Eagle, has been at Audubon Community Nature Center for 20 years! Liberty was ACNC’s first Animal Ambassador, and her story has reached thousands of people across the region. She has inspired many who visit ACNC to learn more about eagles and their incredible recovery after being listed as an endangered species in 1978 as part of the Endangered Species Act.

Since arriving in 2002, Liberty has been one of Audubon’s most unique offerings. Most recently, she inspired the creation of the Pamela A. Westrom Wildlife Habitat which will soon house up to four non-releasable birds of prey. Audubon Community Nature Center believes that providing up-close experiences with live animals enhances educational experiences and also inspires life-long environmentalists. With the addition of these new birds, visitors will be able to compare and contrast a variety of species up close while enjoying programming. Join ACNC and some of Liberty’s new friends in the celebration! Tamarack Wildlife Rehabilitation Center will be on hand to talk about the current threats that eagles face. Children can help build an eagle sized nest, try out some life-sized eagle wings, or sit on some eagle eggs as they learn about these magnificent birds. A Bald Eagle ‘trivia trail’ will be set up that leads to ACNC’s Blue Heron Overlook. Spotting scopes and binoculars will be available for participants to use while looking out for the wild Bald Eagles that hunt on ACNC’s Big Pond.

Join us as we Honor Juneteenth, considered the oldest celebration of the end of enslavement in the United States – and an official state holiday here in New York! We will spotlight the events, experiences, and people fundamental to our collective understanding and appreciation of freedom. The holiday is inspired by events that occurred on June 19, 1865, when Union troops brought the message of emancipation and the end of the Civil War to over 250,000 enslaved persons in Texas – more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. These messengers of freedom were met with shock and jubilation.

Womba Africa is a cultural drum and dance group formed in the town of Nungua. Originally from the town of Nungua Africa, the Womba Africa Drumming and Dance group shares the culture of Ghana through dance and music. Performances are culturally unique in so many ways from their costumes, instruments, rhythms, dance, and songs all originating from West Africa. The members are part of the Ga Adangbe People in greater Accra, Ghana, a tribe with a very rich history and culture quite distinct from other major ethnic groups. The Womba Africa band typically performs with the Ga language because almost all members are from Nungua, a Ga speaking community.

In James McMurtry’s new effort, The Horses and the Hounds, the acclaimed songwriter backs personal narratives with effortless elegance (“Canola Fields”) and endless energy (“If It Don’t Bleed”). This first collection in seven years, due August 20 on New West Records, spotlights a seasoned tunesmith in peak form as he turns toward reflection (“Vaquero”) and revelation ( closer “Blackberry Winter”). McMurtry recorded the new album with legendary producer Ross Hogarth (Ozzy Osbourne, John Fogerty, Van Halen, Keb’ Mo’) at Jackson Browne’s Groovemaster’s in Santa Monica, California, a world-class studio that has housed such legends as Bob Dylan (2012’s Tempest) and David Crosby (2016’s Lighthouse) as well as Browne himself for I’m Alive (1993) and New Found Glory, Coming Home (2006). Accordingly, the new collection marks another upward trajectory: The Horses and the Hounds will be McMurtry’s debut album on genre-defining Americana record label New West Records (Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Buddy Miller, dozens more). //
“BettySoo may well have the most gorgeous voice in Texas …if not in all contemporary folk – its purity and strength can be downright devastating.” – ACOUSTIC GUITAR BettySoo’s vocal prowess is a thing of wonder. A world-class instrument of deft phrasing and purity, a voice that knows when to hold back and when to dive in. At her own live shows, taking a verse onstage with friends or singing harmonies in sessions with Austin’s finest, BettySoo sings with consummate loveliness and self-assurance. A voice that knows the roots of American music inside and out; coming from a most unexpected place – a diminutive Korean-American with a deceptively girl-next-door demeanor.

With music characterized by complex jazz-influenced structures and harmonies, Steely Dan's Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker were famed for their cerebral, wry and eccentric lyrics. Despite the avant-garde nature of their music, their musical marriage turned out to be a winning formula - they have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2001.

Once reclusive, the band now tours more than they ever did in their heyday, dusting off the classics and reinventing them in a way only Steely Dan can. Please note: Steely Dan at St Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview (7.3.2020/6.28.2021) has been rescheduled to June 23, 2022. Your ticket will be honored for the new date.

They illustrate the importance of human contact, chosen family, and hope in dark times. This exhibition is generously sponsored by Brenda & Larry Thompson.

“All that Glitters” exhibition opens. Closing August 7. This exhibition takes its cue from the aphorism “All that Glitters is not Gold”. The dazzling works in this exhibition use embellishments of glitter and gold to question notions of value. For 50 years, Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) has demonstrated how the power of art can transform lives by providing access to ballet for all. Founded in 1969 by the legendary Arthur Mitchell and his former teacher, Karen Shook, DTH has grown into a globally-acclaimed dance institution that occupies a distinguished place in New York City’s cultural landscape and the forefront of American artistic achievement. While continuing to build on the Founders’ vision, artistic director Virginia Johnson, a founding member and former prima ballerina, has brought new energy to DTH since her appointment in 2010. Having been in residency at Chautauqua in Spring of 2021, DTH will now return for their debut performance in the Chautauqua Amphitheater.
