Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company Will Get You Geared Up All Year

If you’ve visited Old Forge, you’ve probably noticed the enormous lot of canoes and kayaks just past the bridge over the Moose River on your way into town. That’s Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company, a name known to many outdoor and paddle sports enthusiasts throughout the Northeast. For the past quarter century, it’s been a staple in the Adirondacks, offering quality gear for all the outdoor pursuits beloved by locals and visitors alike, all year round.
Owner John Nemjo founded Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company 25 years ago, in an abandoned pizza shop in the tiny Adirondack hamlet of Inlet, just up the road from Old Forge. With a lifelong passion for the outdoors, a love of the Adirondacks, and a few thousand dollars in his pocket, he opened up shop originally as a camping, hiking, and backpacking store in 1993, leaving his former job as a school teacher at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. It quickly became apparently that people wanted canoes and kayaks, too, so within the first year, they were added to the inventory.
They also began to offer rentals of canoes, kayaks, mountain bikes, and ski supplies. By 1999, the store was outgrowing its Inlet location, and expanded to its current property on the Moose River, with the Inlet store staying in operation until 2007. In its new location, Mountainman opened two distinct stores, a paddle sports shop and the Adirondack Outdoor Center (AOC), offering camping, hiking, biking, climbing, skiing and snowshoeing supplies and apparel. Since then, a dedicated rental building on the shores of the Moose River and two extension locations in Saratoga Springs have been added to the roster of Mountainman stores, ready to supply all the gear you need for any kind of outdoor adventure your heart desires.
This time of year, if you happen to be in the Adirondacks, you can pick up all you need to pursue a new cross-country skiing or snowshoeing hobby by stopping in at Mountainman. They even offer rentals of cross-country skis and snowshoes, conditions permitting, so you can get a feel for it before you decide if you want to make skiing or snowshoeing a new winter hobby. And a great selection of Mountainman’s inventory can be ordered online, so if you’re not in the Adirondacks, or the Capital Region, you don’t have to wait till you can make a trip up—simply call or click and you’ll be ready for whatever the weather brings without having to leave the house!
And even though it’s still winter, summer will be back before we know it—and this year especially, it’s never too soon to plan ahead! With the summer of 2020 seeing unprecedented numbers of people flocking to the great outdoors, many people found themselves picking up paddling for the first time, and as a result, canoes, kayaks and standup paddleboards sold out at stores across Upstate New York during prime paddling season.
If you’re interested in getting out on the water next summer, now is the prime time to do some research—Mountainman is accepting preorders for canoes, kayaks and standup paddleboards already for Summer 2021, so give them a call and talk to one of the outdoor experts there to find out which boat is best for you, and you won’t have to miss a day of paddling season in Upstate New York once summer comes back around.
