The Adirondacks Celebrate Jazz, Moose, and Oktoberfest

The Adirondack region of Upstate New York is brimming with things to see and do year-round, but as the fall foliage begins to emerge, so do several special events throughout the park—including a moose festival, a jazz festival, and several Oktoberfest celebrations, each a unique experience you won’t want to miss this fall.
First up is Lake George’s Jazz at the Lake festival, held this year Friday through Sunday, September 15-17. More than 35 years running, the event has become a popular annual staple for jazz fans from near and far. Musical performances from renowned jazz artists take place in Lake George’s famed Shepard Park, right on the water, as well as at other stages throughout town. In addition to the live music, there are food and apparel vendors, and the weekend provides the opportunity to enjoy the fall foliage, local attractions and activities, and beauty of the “Queen of American Lakes” as well. Full musical schedules for the five stages, as well as more event details, can be found on the Jazz at the Lake website.
The following weekend, Friday, September 21 through Sunday, September 24, marks the thirteenth annual Great Adirondack Moose Festival in Indian Lake. A homage to the elusive and quintessentially Adirondack create, the Moose Festival features an extensive schedule of events and activities taking place throughout the town of Indian Lake, including film screenings, guided hikes, whitewater rafting and helicopter trips, boat tours, moose calling contests, sidewalk sales and arts and crafts vendors, chainsaw carving demonstrations, educational talks on moose and other aspects of Adirondack wildlife and nature, kids’ events, museum open houses, raffles, live music and food, costumed characters, and even the chance to take a photo with a real (mounted) moose. The weekend’s full schedule is available on the event website
There are also several popular Oktoberfest celebrations held in the Adirondacks each year. Whiteface Mountain will host their annual Whiteface Oktoberfest on Saturday September 30 and Sunday October 1 this year. Featuring live music, traditional food, plenty of beer, family-friendly activities, and scenic gondola rides, the festival is a favorite for many across the state.
The following weekend, Columbus Day weekend, is the traditional time for the Lake George Village Oktoberfest. Each year, the village of Lake George transforms Canada Street into a European-style street fair featuring live music, artisans and crafters, carnival and pony rides, activities like keg tossing and stein hoisting, a variety of traditional German foods, and of course, plenty of beer. Admission is free and the event will run for three days, from Friday October 6 through Sunday October 8, 2023.
The town of Old Forge rounds out the Oktoberfest schedule, with a one-day event held on Saturday October 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the town’s North Street Pavilion. Pumpkins, hayrides, music and other performances, photo opportunities, food, and wine and beer from several vendors round out the offerings. Old Forge Area Events is hosting and will have more details available as the date approaches.
These events are just a few of many activities to keep you entertained in the Adirondacks this fall. Check out more attractions and activities on Discover Upstate New York’s Adirondack page.
