Old Forge is The Perfect Place for Snowmobiling

posted by Teresa Farrell at 2018-01-17 15:01:00

When winter comes to Upstate New York, it means one thing for many: snowmobiling season. Old Forge, in the heart of the Central Adirondacks, is a winter playground that draws snowmobile enthusiasts not only from around the state, but even from around the rest of the country for a long-anticipated winter getaway in the woods.

There’s no better place to go for snow. Old Forge routinely gets upwards of 170 inches of the white stuff in a winter—that’s more than 14 feet! Sounds unbelievable, but heavy snow is a huge part of what gets this area a reputation as the ‘snowmobiling capital of the East’—and for good reason.

The Old Forge area  is home to a whopping 500 miles of snowmobile trails, and a team of dedicated trail groomers goes out twice a day during peak season to make sure they’re in prime condition. The nearby Moose River Plains wilderness area is also approved for snowmobiling. In case all that is somehow not enough, they also loop into other trail systems to connect all across Upstate New York and even into Canada. And if you don’t have a sled but want to ride anyway, don’t worry: You can rent one at various places around and outside of town.

Throughout the winter, the tiny town becomes a base camp for plenty of snowmobilers, but no one wants to miss Snodeo, the annual season kickoff in early December that features races, vendors, food, entertainment and general spirit of camaraderie amongst the winter crowd.

But that’s not all there is to do in town. Local hotels, motels and vacation rentals  provide a great place to rest for the night; bars, restaurants, and other eateries   offer a chance to come in out of the cold and warm up with friends; and there are plenty of other local attractions to visit year-round to fill an off-trail afternoon.
