Discover a Winter Wonderland in Delaware County
posted by Delaware County at 2023-03-02 04:31:00
Delaware County is home to some of the best winter activities in the state. Winter walks, hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails, skiing, snow tubing and so much more. Here you can read about the many winter activities (including cozy ones indoors!) that Delaware County has to offer!
The many mountain peaks in Delaware County make for great downhill winter activities. For skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing Plattekill Mountain is a must. The diversity of Plattekill offers beginner, intermediate and expert trails, family friendly snowtubing, a variety of dining options, a full bar and an outdoor fire pit. This family-owned mountain is a beacon of small town charm.
Right across the border of Delaware County is the illustrious Belleayre Mountain. This Mountain has the only high-speed gondola in the Catskills, making learning how to ski or ride accessible and fun. After you’ve worked up an appetite, make your way back to Delaware County and enjoy pizza and more at Oakley’s Wood-fired Pizza and Grill.
Delaware County has mountains and valleys alike. The lengthy valleys allow for cross country skiing and snowshoeing with a stunning backdrop. A beautiful place to adventure is the Catskill Scenic Trail. This old railroad route has been beautifully transformed into a wide trail with a slight grade. If you need to rent cross country skis or snowshoes, go for a quick drive across the Delaware County border to Jimmy’s Belleayre Ski Shop. Andes Rail Trail offers a similar charm in the old dairy town of Andes. The trail begins at the lovely pergola from the 1907 train depot and meanders through woodlands, fields, along a babbling stream and past the remnants of an old stone mill. After your walk, ski or snowshoe, stop in for dinner at the iconic Andes Hotel or for a drink at Dana’s Place. For another cross country skiing or snowshoeing adventure, visit the Delhi Golf Course and traverse its rolling hills. Warm up with a delicious meal on Main Street in Delhi at the new and well-reviewed EightyMain Kitchen and Bar or try the pub-style menu at O’Neill’s Shire Pub.
For a winter adventure that doesn’t require much equipment, just grab your jacket and make your way to the edge of Andes to walk along two scenic loops of the Palmer Hill Trails. This walk provides extensive views and kid friendly hiking. Another amazing walk awaits at Bear Spring Mountain Wildlife Management Area. There are 7,000 acres of wildlife and 11 maintained trails that provide a lot of space for exploration and adventure.
Snowmobiling enthusiasts love the hundreds of miles of well-maintained trails in Delaware County with scenery that can’t be beat – just picture yourself riding through rolling mountainous terrain with hills, woods, rivers and lakes. There are many clubs that will be happy to give you recommendations and trail info. Connect with the Hamden Hill Ridge Riders of Hamden, the D&D Snowdiggers Club of Deposit, the Central Catskill Trail Association of Andes or the Delaware-Otsego-Chenango Snowriders of Sidney. A few restaurants accessible by the snowmobile trails are The Hidden Inn in South Kortright and the Hamden Inn in Hamden.
If the weather is not great, we have no shortage of things to do indoors. We have a variety of businesses and organizations hosting classes. Hipstitch Academy in Harpersfield offers all things sewing. From classes to drop-in meetups, Hipstitch is for beginner and expert sewers alike. Luck Dragon, a new business in Delhi, is an arts & crafts supply store that offers regular workshops in garden design, soldering small electronics and much more. In Roxbury, you can find regular workshops and an art gallery at the Roxbury Arts Group. They offer exciting activities for kids and families. The Hobart Book Village is a great stop for those looking to get lost in the stacks. The eight independent book stores recently received rave reviews in The New York Times. This village offers an afternoon of exploring. Delaware County is not short on things to do this winter. Start planning your visit and enjoy the wonders of this unique time of year!
