Visit the 'Speculator Area' in the South-Central Adirondacks

posted by Teresa Farrell at 2021-05-02 17:04:00

When you’re planning your Adirondack adventures for this summer, make sure you make room in your schedule for a trip to the Speculator area. Located in the south-central portion of the Adirondack Park and surrounded by natural beauty, this area surrounding the towns of Speculator, Lake Pleasant, Piseco, Morehouse and Arietta  are a favorite getaway for many who are looking to slow down, relax, and step back into simpler times during their summer vacation.

The small towns that make up this region serve as an excellent base camp to explore all the activities you can dream of doing in this part of the Adirondacks, with all the amenities you need to support your adventures. Shopping, dining, and lodging are abundant in the area, with well-stocked stores, plenty of restaurants, and places to stay that range from traditional motels  to cabins, cottages and lodges to private vacation rentals.

While there are plenty of things do in town, most people are drawn to the area for its excellent outdoor recreation opportunities—the possibilities here are seemingly endless, thanks to the several lakes, forests and waterways nearby. Swimming, hiking, boating, fishing, paddling, cycling and camping opportunities abound, with wild forests, mountains, lakes, streams and rivers in every direction, and plenty of space to spread out and explore. Public beaches, boat launches, and marinas can be found along the shores of many of these lakes, and canoes, kayaks, paddle boards and motorized boats are all available for rent in the area. Fishing  here is known to be excellent, with several species of fish found in the lakes, streams and rivers of the region, including trout, panfish, walleye, bass, salmon and more.

Hikers can enjoy plenty of nearby trails throughout the surrounding wilderness, including those that run up several nearby mountains. Those not interested in an uphill climb or a long expedition might prefer the town of Speculator’s interpretive river walk, the Sacandaga River Community Park, which offers a sense of the region’s history and culture with interpretive panels along a handicap-accessible network of boardwalks and trails that traverse the wetlands of the area.
And mountain bikers can spend a blissful day on one of the most extensive marked mountain bike trail systems in the park, which offers two full bike loops originating from the Speculator baseball field; one is a 13.7-mile loop, while the other loop is 7.2 miles long.

It doesn’t matter if you visit for a day, a weekend, a week or even longer—if you love the outdoors, whether you love to kick back, relax and enjoy a day at the beach or push yourself to conquer a mountain peak before lunch, make sure to add the Speculator area to your summer bucket list of Adirondack adventures. You may just find you’ve found a new annual Adirondack  tradition.
